Burnham Overy Marshes
Based on an extract from Go Birding Magazine by Mark Ward

Parking
Next to Burnham Overy Staithe Harbour (grid ref: TF 843 443; ample parking) or by the A149 at the top of the road to Burnham Thorpe, half a mile to the East (room for about eight cars).

The quality of the Winter birding found in this picturesque section of Holkham National Nature Reserve easily matches the more popular coastal bird reserves.  Visitors to the area will be treated to Pink-Footed and Dark-Bellied Brent Geese, often including a smattering of Pale-Bellied Brents and a Black Brant or two.

Sightings of a Ross's Goose and a "Lesser Canada Goose" can turn also up with the Pink-Footed Brent Geese.  Another likely sighting can be the Greenland White-Fronted Goose, Tundra Bean Goose or the Barnacle Goose so look carefully!

Egyptian Geese are abundant Canada and Grelag Geese also add to selection of bird species.  Numerous European White-Fronted Geese also visit the marshes, whilst the harbour encourages a good variety of Waders - eg Grey Plover, Turnstone, Dunlin, Redshank, Curlew, Knot and Rock Pipit.  Regular visitors also include Peregrine, Merlin, Hen Harrier, Barn and Short-Eared Owls.  Among the Divers are Slavonian and Red-Necked Grebes and Seaduck, including Velvet Scoter.

In the trees and bushes, look out for Little Egrets - particularly near the west end of Holkham Meals.

The Winter roost attracts more than 100 birds.
