HOL is horrified at recent news that The Princess Theatre in Hunstanton
is to close
and the Arts Centre in Kings Lynn is also under threat.
This lovely building has become central to Hunstanton life and many of us have enjoyed shows
here (whether watching or performing) over the years and would like the
opportunity to continue to do so in the coming years. Besides serving the community with entertainment,
The Princess Theatre is also are hired
for rehearsals for shows, and for local organizations and societies to
showcase their talent to the public and to raise funds for themselves.
Venues such as these are outlets for showbiz celebrities where people may
otherwise never get a chance to see them.
The Princess
Theatre draws people to the town from far afield as Ely, Boston, Cromer
and Norwich and beyond. The closure of such a prestigious theatre
venue would be detrimental to the local economy and it is likely to
would never reopen should closure plans succeed. It is intended
that all shows, including the pantomimes, are sent to The Corn Exchange
in Kings Lynn. Productions held at The Princess Theatre are more
affordable than they would be at The Corn Exchange, which is really a
concert hall.
